Generic vs. Brand

The Morning Show (WJXT out of Jacksonville) recently did a segment on Generic vs. Brand in the grocery store. The lady they interviewed does not cut coupons but she is able to save on her grocery bill just by purchasing store brands only.

The reporter did a price comparison on a few items. Below is one example of store brand versus brand. In all cases the store brand was the best deal.

Salad Dressing
Winn Dixie Brand $1.99 (this is the price the lady paid)
Kraft Brand $2.99

That was a good deal but not a great deal. Because I use a coupon system, many times I have gotten the Kraft brand for $1.00, $.50 and even for free. It depends if it is on sale as a "buy one get one free", a 2 for $4, if the store doubles coupons, the coupon value, etc.

I tell people all the time that there are different levels of savings. If you want to cut your grocery bill but do not want to clip coupons, you should buy generic, visit Family Dollar and Dollar General for household cleaning products and/or purchase your groceries at the larger discount stores -- BUT for maximum savings you should use the coupon system.

I applaud this lady's savings and I am sure it helps take the pressure off of her household budget. I am not saying I won't ever buy a store brand because some are very good quality, but in most cases with the system I use, it is cheaper for me to buy brand name products.

  1. Lisa,

I definitely have to agree with you on this one!

The store brands are usually only rougly 25% cheaper than their name brand friends. You are so right about waiting for a sale and using a coupon. When you combine the coupon with the sale you can yield a savings of at least 50% or more off of the product and therefore beat the store brand price!

Here are some things that you will almost always buy brand name...milk...cheese...bread (unless you are like me and have to buy a certain kind!)eggs...flour...sugar...etc. Most always it is the staple items that go store brand for me.

Tip: Flour/Sugar/Baking Needs items will go on sale starting in November. Check your expiration dates and storage info and stock up for quite a few months! I was able to purchase flour for .99/5/lb bag and sugar for .80 in the same weight! I am still running off of that supply! By doing this...I have saved a lot of money...not paying full price for these items!

I do not have many name brand items in my stockpile. I simply have been able to get the name brand items for 50 or more % off of the retail price by using coupons.

A little store brand FYI. Most grocery stores employ name brand companies to make their store brand products.

We have a Publix and they are probably one of the few stores that has their own plants for making most of their store brand items.

They have a dairy and baking plant that takes care of those items but Coke makes their water products. I absolutely love Dasani water. In my personal opinion it is the best tasting water...but guess what...I buy the Publix store brand, get it for a fraction of the cost, and am getting the Dasani water! Who knew?

I would have to say that if someone doesn't want to use coupons then buying store brand is the way to go...less hassle...but I would have a hard time giving up my coupons for only a 25% savings! I love all things free!

I hope you have a wonderful day!
