We leave today for Savannah for Patrick's (my husband), first of two ankle fusions. If successful, he will be having the second surgery in late fall.
The pain has gotten progressively worse each year to the point that he is very limited in standing and walking. Over the last few years, we have checked all surgery options from using cadaver bone to ankle replacement. Due to his age, all doctors lean toward fusion. If he were ten years older, perhaps replacement would be a better option.
The doctor says to plan on being in a hard cast for at least 8 weeeeeeeeks. This does not make for a happy camper. Over the course of the next few weeks, I will be his nurse, waitress, chef, errand girl, secretary and maid... We have meds, crutches, walker, potty seat, shower chair and even a wheelchair. So we are ready to roll.
Oh yes, we will be getting plenty of pain medication and maybe a little something for my nerves -- so not to worry! I will make a post after surgery.
