Over at Money Saving Mom, she has a guest post from Karen over at Saving The Family Money regarding Skype and the benefits of using it. I have heard of Skype but never really knew what it was all about. The post is worth the read and it may be something you decide to check out for yourself -- especially if you have family overseas or you travel a lot. The opportunity to save on your phone bill is huge.We have not parted with our land line but I know many people who rely just on their cell phones. My daughter's generation will probably never have a land line. I have gotten away from the traditional phone companies and signed on with digital voice with Comcast a couple of years ago but it is still considered a land line. This cut my phone bill by a third. For the most part, we have been happy with it but there are always issues with every service.
I am leery about not having a land line for emergency purposes. With the traditional phone companies you are automatically linked in with 911 emergency. With Comcast, they make the initial registration with 911 for you. However, if you move and take your phone number and Comcast service with you, you will need to contact Comcast or 911 to report your new address.
We need our land line for our security system as well. Any ideas on whether a security system works without a land line?
Thanks Money Saving Mom and Karen at Saving The Family Money for the great post on Skype.

Thanks for visiting my site and a super thanks for passing along the great info on Skype. If any of your readers have questions, please let me know. I also love the term "treasure hunting"! I will have to use that one. Yes I'd rather be out shopping garage sales as well this morning, but here in Florida the heat sometimes scares me away. Take care

I am on the GA coast and we are broiling too. Love your site. I am getting ready for a coupon/savings class today. My daughter made an awesome Powerpoint for me so I am tinkering with that or I would be out Treasure Hunting this morning.
ReplyDeleteAn excellent alternative to using a land line with a security system is cellular monitoring. Almost all security companies offer this service. Normally you will pay a couple of hundred dollars for the hardware and an average of about $10 a month additional charge for the service. This way you don't need a landline at all and unlike using a landline, where your phone line could be cut by intruders, cellular systems can't be defeated from the outside of the home.
ReplyDeleteWow thanks. I have not heard cellular monitoring. I will have to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI'm still a little confused. Do you attach a camera onto your computer and then one onto the receiving computer? I want to see G.G.
ReplyDeleteYou definitely need to see G.G. The lady, Karen, that wrote the post would probably love to hear from you. I am still in the learning mode but tons of people are using it.
ReplyDeleteOne thing Alexandra just set up on our Mac laptops is the ability to talk with each other via video - I did not know our Mac would do this -she did not have to download anything. I don't know how she did it. But I am excited because you know I will be video conferencing her once she is at college. I think she did it through gmail.
