Favorite Purchase of the Week

After much debating over what to get my husband for an anniversary gift I decided on this

This goes on my "way cool" list.

For years, every time we made a full pot of coffee, half of it went down the drain. I am usually only good for one cup anyway and it has to be decaff but the problem is he drinks high-test or what I call crude oil, so there really is no happy medium.

Another area of disagreement is that I like flavored coffee and he prefers regular. How we ever got together is beyond me. Coffee is such an important part of the morning and to have a really good cup of coffee just sets the tone for the day.

One day, we just quit making coffee and I solved our problem by going instant -- one regular and one decaff. Of course, it is not anywhere near as good as fresh brewed but at least it gave us a jump start to the day.

Finally about six months ago, a friend of mine introduced me to this coffee system and demonstrated it while we were dining at her house. I knew right then I wanted one and that it would solve all of our issues with morning coffee. It just seemed the perfect solution to our conflicting preferences for coffee. Our 22nd anniversary was a good excuse to purchase one.

We both love it and can't wait to make fresh brewed coffee each morning. The coffee comes in small single serve sealed cups and we have a variety of coffees to choose from. I was told you can order on line and request auto ship. Also a couple of the manufacturers offer Buy 2 boxes Get 1 box Free deals. That offer rang home for me.

The fun thing about this brewer is that we don't have to settle on one brand. I can purchase flavored decaff and he can go with the stronger varieties. We can also use tea cartridges and hot chocolate. I have not tried the samples provided as of yet.

This system brews coffee faster than I can heat a hot mug of water in the microwave. Each morning, I check to make sure there is water in the reservoir, press the power button, give it three minutes to initialize and heat the water, pop in the coffee cartridge and in 30 seconds or less we have a steaming cup of java. It is so fast you can still use it for larger groups and everyone enjoys picking out their own variety/blend.

This brewer definitely is my favorite purchase of the week, month, and year so far. Well I take back year. So far for the year it is the Apple MacBook MB466LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop. I am a first time Mac user and will never go back to PC. In trying to express how much I like my Mac, I would use all of my assigned space on blogger so I won't got there today.

If you are thinking about purchasing this brewer system, make sure you get the one with 3 brew sizes. My friend has used both types and she says that this is by far the best way to go. We're happy!

Organize and Clean Up Your Messy House

Like Oprah, one of my favorite sites is The Container Store. We have been busy visiting websites looking for the best organizational items for our daughters dorm room and signing up for the $1,000 Dorm Room Makeover here. .

Check out Oprah's show this Wednesday, July 1st. She is having the Clean Up Your Messy House Tour and The Container Store will be featured with a special surprise. Maybe I will be inspired to clean out the last sore spot at my house and that is the garage. That garage sale I have been planning to have for three months, still has not happened. I am feeling the need for some motivation.

Another item we are looking for is a comfy chair. We considered a papasan, however, they take up so much room. The futon has been nixed due to space limitations. The girls want to loft their beds and we only have 74 inches in length to put a chair, bookcase, and fridge underneath the bed. Two girls will be sharing a space 11' x 11' for about eight months so we are trying to be creative and use every square inch.

If you know of another good site for dorm seating, please me know. She found something on PB Teen but it is a little more than I would like to spend since she will only be in the dorm 8 months. I am thinking bean bag but she has other ideas, so the search continues.

Harris Teeter Super Doubles Update

Today, I made my third trip to Harris Teeter for Super Doubles and I just need to brag about my savings -- every time I brag, more people jump on the savings train.

I realized after putting away my groceries, I should have taken a quick picture. Most of my purchases were cleaning products, pet food, personal products, paper products as well as lots of fruit. (My daughter was with me and this was her contribution to the cart.)

Retail: $194.78

Paid: $64.07

SAVED: $130.71

Favorite purchase of the day is:

Bic Soleil Razor Handle/Cartridge
Reg: $7.99
Sale: $4.99
Use: 06-28 SS $3.00/1
Buy 1
Final: $1.99

These will be going with my daughter to college. I already have a huge care package ready to go with her when she leaves. Also, if you purchased the Razor Handle, there is a $2.00 off Q inside for next time.

Favorite purchase of the day that I am sorry I missed. In this case "early bird gets the worm."

Duracell Coopertop
Reg: $4.99
Sale: $2.19
Use: 06-28 RP .75
Final: .69

I had several Q's from last months flyer but the batteries were all wiped out and will not be restocked until Tuesday night. I did get a rain check, but I noticed my Q's expired on the last day of sale so they will be useless. But not to fret, I just discovered the 06-28 RP has the coupons for .75 off. These batteries will also be going in the care package.

We go through a pack of batteries every week at my house for some reason or another. In the old days, I paid $5-$6 but I am enjoying my huge savings. I wish I had tons of coupons, I would really stock up.

Remember, last day of sale is tomorrow.

Don't forget to check out my link at the Grocery Gathering at BeCentsAble for other deals you may have missed.

Couponing In The News

The Coupon World has changed dramatically over the last twelve months. I was at Harris Teeter yesterday and was amazed at how many people were couponing and saving the bucks like me.

My savings

Retail: $111.13

Paid: $34.47

Saved: $76.66

I am sure I will make several more trips to stockpile as there are just too many great deals. I hope you checked out my match-ups here and here.

To further help you in your savings, you might want to check out a new coupon site that has just come under my radar -- Coupon IQ. Lissa over at Saving Your Cents introduced me to the site and she just posted an informative article on Coupon IQ. The concept is to save families money and give businesses FREE advertising.

Carnival of Savings - A Call For Submissions

UPDATE: The publication date is July 15 but for some reason it is listing at June 15. The help desk is working on fixing this problem. You may still post and I will receive.

____________________________________________________

I learned about Blog Carnivals at 5 Minutes For Mom and was inspired to start a carnival. It sounds like a lot of fun and I just could not find a carnival that catered to all the interests that I share with so many of you.

So with Savings With Sadie the "Carnival of Savings" is born and Savings With Sadie is hosting the 1st Edition and is looking for bloggers to take a turn at hosting the site as well as bloggers interested in posting submissions for the carnival.

Besides the fun of hosting a carnival and all the great tips you receive, by acting as a host and/or linking your post, you have the opportunity to meet new bloggers that have the same interests that you do. Since this is a new carnival, I have not set the schedule for weekly or monthly. I listed it as ongoing but first edition is scheduled for release July 15 if all goes well. Submission deadline will be July 14.

Initially, we will publish approximately every four weeks. The goal eventually will be to publish every two weeks and to set up a schedule of hosts.

The Carnival of Savings "topics" include general savings tips as well as savings in the following areas:

Grocery Tips
Couponing
Retail Savings
Gardening Tips/Savings
Travel Tips/Savings
Restaurant Savings
Household Savings Tips
Consignment Tips
Garage Sale Tips
Budgeting

If you are a Treasure Hunter, you may even make a post to share your favorite flea market, antique store, and great deals found.

Important Note If You Are Interested in Hosting The Carnival of Savings:

Email submissions for the edition you are hosting will automatically be forwarded to you. The host will only need to cut and paste the submission links - no need to type it up and link - it is all done for you. You may even comment by adding an intro for each submission if you like but it is not necessary. You might comment on one or two.

The carnival will be a large post on your site, depending on the number of submissions. We want The Carnival of Savings to be a fun informative site.
As a host, you have the option to be the lead post if you choose to submit a tip. It is not necessary that you submit a post since you are hosting the carnival and taking the time to put the edition together. It should not take more than an hour or two of your time to do this. That will depend on you.

If you are not interested in hosting but would like to submit a post to the carnival: Follow in 3 Easy Steps:

To submit a post for consideration to the Carnival of Savings, click on the submit button below. You will not actually be submitting the content but just the permalink.

Where is says "Carnival" and example, click on the drop down and scroll up a good bit and select "carnival of savings." Once selected, enter your permalink to your post and a brief comment and that is it.

If you have trouble posting, or if you are interested in hosting, please email carnivalofsavings at gmail dot com.

Please share this post with other bloggers and let's get a carnival going!

Mediterranean Cruise For Two Travel Channel Contest

It has been a few years since my husband and I went on a Mediterranean cruise. Prior to the trip, I could tell my husband was a little apprehensive about cruising -- just not his cup of tea. He was pleasantly surprised and he even agreed to go on a family cruise to the Bahamas spring a year ago. A completely different kind of cruise but fun was had none the less.

Our Mediterranean cruise, ranks right at the top as one of my best adventures yet. Our journey began in Barcelona and ended in Civitavecchia, Italy. Each morning, as we dined out on our balcony, we enjoyed watching as the ship slowly moved in to port. I will never forget the morning we came into beautiful and glamorous Monaco. There were luxury yachts belonging to the rich and famous from around the world. Some yachts appeared to be as big as our ship. Small boats, jet skies and more were just dripping from the sides of the yachts and a few even had a car or two parked on deck. What a decadent way of life!

One other memory I have is while dining on the balcony, I noticed a lot of very, very small sail boats moving about in the water. As the boats came closer (literally right under our balcony), I could see they were all children and an adult or two. Each one had their own boat and a few had partners. There must have been 15 small boats. I learned that this was yachting school.

The staff on board our ship informed me that each Wednesday in Monaco the children do not go to traditional school but instead the day is dedicated to honing their skills whether it be sailing, piano, sports or other. It is difficult to digest the wealth and lifestyle in this beautiful country.

There are many ways to travel and cruising is just one adventure in a thousand. A cruise is definitely not on our agenda right now but if I win this one, we will be on our way. You may want to check out this contest for a chance to win a spectacular vacation for two.

UPDATE: The Med Cruise contest ended June 30. See new giveaway below...

Breeze 2 Diabetic Monitor For Free

Both my father and his mother were diabetic and with the cost of supplies it is always nice to get a freebie. I remember my mother checking my fathers blood glucose level every morning with one of these devices.

Click here and visit Bayer HealthCare and take advantage of their FREE BREEZE 2 Meter.

From the looks of the form, all you do is provide your name and address and answer two or three questions.

If you take advantage of this offer, come back here and post and let us know if the sign up process is as simple as it appears to me. This does not appear to be a teaser ad.

FYI: Bayer Diabetes Care 24/7 support number is 1-800-348-8100.

Simple Sign Up For Free Samples

I like "no strings attached" FREE samples. Here are a few samples that I found that don't seem to have any other motive other than offering you the free item.

I don't care for free offers that tease you into signing up for something else or the offers that lead you in to pages of surveys. I try to verify most freebies but it is not always possible to keep up.

The following samples are very straight forward and basically the manufacturer just wants your address for mailing. If you find one that is undesirable, please send me an email or comment and I will remove it.

Sample of Nescafe Tasters Choice

Carefree Liners

Sample of New Colgate Maxfresh Toothpaste - Limited Supply
Free Quart of Glidden Paint
Free Yoplait Whips
Kashi Oatmeal Coupon $1.50 (use for Super Doubles at HT)

What are your favorite anti-aging and mineral make up products?

I can't believe I have gone through half my life without trying mineral make up. For about a year now, I have been using Jane Iredale and love it, love it, love it. I remember when mineral make up first came on the scene in the 70's. At the time, it was new and I was hesitant to try it because I was having some skin issues. In hindsight, I should have been using it and I probably would not have had such bad break-outs -- but no, I was piling on the heavy creamy make up to cover the blemishes.

Mineral make up contains very fine ground minerals with no dyes, chemicals or preservatives that are typically found in traditional make up. It is a light make up and many of the mineral foundations provide sun protection. Just about every make up manufacturer has their own line of mineral make up today.

If you have not tried mineral make up and you have a Sephora in your area, click here and take advantage of this Free sample of Bare Escentuals. Just print and take this voucher into your Sephora located inside J. C. Penny and get your 10 day sample. Limited supply available.

I have not tried Bare Escentuals and can't comment on the quality, but if my J. C. Penny store is participating, I will give it a try.

If you want to jump right in, this link will take you to a starter kit - Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Starter kit (light) and you can pick out medium or dark tone as well. One other site I just discovered is Pur Minerals. I have not tried it but it is mineral based as well.

On the off chance that you would like to age gracefully, take a look at Super Supplements for Skin, Mind and Body written by Dalia Santina, Ph.D., a leading national and international writer and a skin and nutrition consultant.
Dr. Santina not only discusses vitamins and minerals but also has a comprehensive section on anti-aging, anti-disease antioxidants and another section is dedicated to the discussion of 15 healing herbs, i.e. immune, vision, skin, and body health-promoting powers.

I am definitely at the point in my life where a good skin regime as well as good anti-aging products is extremely important. Skin Authority is the anti-aging system that I use. It is a favorite right now but I am open to trying new products all the time. I have been using Skin Authority for two years and I am very pleased with this product line. It is a little pricey, but I have not yet found anything that compares to its quality.

About eight weeks ago, I took a break from Skin Authority and experimented with Loreal's newest anti-aging products: Loreal Paris New Advanced Revita Lift Deep Set Wrinkle Repair Day Lotion and Night Cream. You can click here to check out the post I wrote on participating in Bzz Agents product testing about eight weeks ago.

I can't say that I saw dramatic results because I had just come off of Skin Authority and my skin was in great shape. My skin is very sensitive and a plus was this product did not break out my skin. The scent of the lotions are very pleasant and the lotions are not heavy. I do not like products that give you a heavy mask feeling. I did share a few small samples with folks but have not received feedback. There probably was not enough in the packet to provide good feedback.

I have always been a Loreal fan and Loreal Paris New Advanced Revita Lift Deep Set Wrinkle Repair Day Lotion and Night Cream is very reasonably priced for budget minded people looking for a good product.
If you have a favorite make up or anti aging product, please share it.

College Orientation

Today has been a long day. Up at 6:00 AM for breakfast and then Orientation at 8:00 AM - just got back to the room at 10:00 PM. We had back to back meetings and events all day so there was no time to post.

Tomorrow will be just as busy and then we end it by a long drive home tomorrow night.

Many of you have become quite savvy in combining a good sale, register rewards, Q's and a $5 off $25 for huge savings.

Skype - What is it?

Over at Money Saving Mom, she has a guest post from Karen over at Saving The Family Money regarding Skype and the benefits of using it. I have heard of Skype but never really knew what it was all about. The post is worth the read and it may be something you decide to check out for yourself -- especially if you have family overseas or you travel a lot. The opportunity to save on your phone bill is huge.

We have not parted with our land line but I know many people who rely just on their cell phones. My daughter's generation will probably never have a land line. I have gotten away from the traditional phone companies and signed on with digital voice with Comcast a couple of years ago but it is still considered a land line. This cut my phone bill by a third. For the most part, we have been happy with it but there are always issues with every service.

I am leery about not having a land line for emergency purposes. With the traditional phone companies you are automatically linked in with 911 emergency. With Comcast, they make the initial registration with 911 for you. However, if you move and take your phone number and Comcast service with you, you will need to contact Comcast or 911 to report your new address.

We need our land line for our security system as well. Any ideas on whether a security system works without a land line?

Thanks Money Saving Mom and Karen at Saving The Family Money for the great post on Skype.

Target Coupon Policy

Here is an excerpt from an email I received from Target Customer Service on their email policy.

When accepting coupons, Target uses the following guidelines:

    • Target accepts two kinds of coupons: Target-issued and manufacturer-issued.

    • Target accepts one Target coupon and one manufacturer coupon for the same item, unless either coupon prohibits it.

    • Target can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item; in this case, we’re able to adjust the value of the coupon to equal the price of the item.

    • Target can’t accept coupons from other retailers, or coupons for products not carried in our stores.

    • All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier while you’re checking out.

For questions about using a specific coupon, Target encourages you to stop by Guest Service and ask to speak with the Guest Service Team Leader. They’ll do their best to help while you’re in the store. If you still have questions after speaking with them, please call Guest Relations team at (800) 440-0680.

Thursday

Get a Free sample of Scott Extra Soft Tissue Double Roll as well as Scott Naturals flushable wipes here. You really want to get the coupons. I have not received a Free sample that did not have coupons. Just type in your address for easy savings.

I do like the
Scott brand and really like it when I get $11.00 cases of paper towels for $4.00 at CVS. That offer has not been around in a while but I will keep an eye out for it. I always purchase the limit which is three. If you do the same, you will need three Q's -- AND if it is timed just right you will be able to take advantage of one of the $5 off $30 deals for greater savings.

Oh, I remember the old days when I would pay full price. Once you get the savings bug and see how much money you can save, you will never be able to pay full price again.

Check your email!

I just received an email from CVS with a
$5 off next purchase of $30 or more now through June 21st. The coupon has my name on it so it is not one that I can share.

You may want to check your email to see if you received the coupon. If you are not registered at
CVS, do so now to take advantage of their special offers and coupons.

Use those MFG's and ECB's with the $5 off coupon. Click
here and go to Hip 2 Save and check out her CVS matchups for this week. Also Southern Savers has her CVS matchups posted.

I don't know what you think, but I think the deals are not that great this week at any of the stores. Of course, I have not had a chance to check out Publix and Target deals this week. Maybe I am just not finding what I want.

There must be some rock bottom deals around the corner. Keep checking back, if the deals are there, SWS will post. If you find one, email SWS so I can share with others and we can all take advantage of the savings.

Thanks Hip 2 Save and Southern Savers for your match ups.

Coupon Organization System

I have not tried the Couponizer yet but it looks like a cool organizer. I have read about it and talked with a few people that use it and they seem pleased. I am just not sure how many coupons it holds or if it is big enough. If you have used it, please comment. I do not cut up my weekly inserts with the system I use, but I still end up with lots of loose coupons from emails, newsletters, mailers, peelies, hangtags, and catalinas.

Here is another one I am thinking about...

It looks a little larger and is a little more money and not sure I want one that big.

I am always on a quest for a better system and love to hear how others organize. Share your thoughts or links to other great organizers.

Treasure Hunting

I forgot to mention that Saturday was Treasure Hunting day -- for me that is. I saw an ad about a sale on antique furniture and miscellaneous items, so I set out early to find the place. It is located in the old Dixie Paint plant on Highway 17 in Brunswick, Georgia. I guess the man has leased the space and they are also using it as a lumber yard as well. They have huge timbers ready for cut and old beams stored in the warehouse ready for a new home.

This is the kind of place you have to check back often as new "old things" are coming in all the time. You have to get over the fact that the warehouse is old and dark and dingy but this just adds charm to the treasure hunting. They are not open every day but if you see a vehicle, they are probably cutting the timbers -- stop in a take a look.

There were lots of unusual pieces of furniture and what-nots. The kind I like to rummage through. As soon as I got there, I knew this is the kind of thing my friend, Cissy, enjoyed as well -- so I called her up bright and early and she met me there.

We scoured through everything, not really finding anything we really needed but we promised to be back. A lot of the items had come out of homes in south Florida. The owner said they are always getting interesting architectural pieces but those go fast. A local architect and a designer went in and cleaned them out the week before. Oh well, we will beat them to the punch next time. It is always a hit or miss on treasure hunting.

They also sell pallets of brick and at a good price -- .50 a brick and will deliver. I am not sure if this place has a name -- once I find out, I will come back and re post.

I am always looking for a new place to treasure hunt. If you have a favorite place for treasure hunting and you are willing to divulge its location, leave a comment.
