Garage Sale Madness

I have been talking about having a garage sale since spring and just never got around to it. I am not usually a procrastinator but for some reason, I just could not get it together.

This week it really hit me that our daughter leaves for college in about ten days so I decided I better put things in high gear and take advantage of her while she is still at home. She is a great organizer and a tremendous help with all the projects around the house. Sometimes I feel like the child and she is the mother -- especially when I don't put something back is its rightful place.

Wednesday, I made up my mind to have the sale so I quickly called the newspaper and ran the ad -- I was definitely not prepared for a sale but I knew if I ran the ad, I would be trapped.

So the ad goes in the paper Wednesday and on Thursday we went shopping for dorm room items like there was no tomorrow. I guess it was about 5:00 PM Thursday evening when I realized what I had done. There is nothing like a little pressure to get me going but I now wonder why I had to have the sale on Friday and Saturday - why not just Saturday. I can't remember my reasoning but I am sure it made sense at the time.

With my daughter's help, we pulled and weeded through items and I was ready to go by noon today when we were hit by an onslaught of professional garage sale junkies. I must also add that my wonderful neighbor came over and spent the afternoon with me helping out - could not have done it with her either.

We had a great day, made a lot of money and will be getting ready for the next batch of folks tomorrow. Still have lots of treasures and pulling some new ones tonight. Also, since I am no longer working in the business world, I am saying goodbye to all my beautiful Talbots and Chicos cloths and it feels good!

I am looking forward to "uncluttered" closets and getting rid of the things that just seem to be hanging around for no reason.

Everyone should
Simplify!

Wednesday

We received the Glidden paint in the mail yesterday and I don't know about any of you that took advantage of the offer, but I had an arsenal of tools trying to pry off the safety lid. I must have spent 15 minutes trying to open it. I left the room to find something else to pry off the lid and when I returned, my daughter had removed the lid on her first try.

I guess I have a lot to learn before she leaves for college. My list is growing long on the things she needs to teach me -- especially on the computer.

The free paint has already been put to good use. She just finished painting a small book case given to her by a friend who no longer needed it. She painted it Spring Green and it will go beautiful with her all her accessories. She also painted a lamp and will be decoupaging a cheap lamp shade she has yet to buy.

Instead of our To Do List getting shorter it seems to be getting longer. Evey day we add new items to the list of things we need to do prior to leaving for college.

Now off to the next project.

As Seen On TV Confession

True Confession: I could easily be an "as seen on T.V. junkie." Have you ever noticed an entire wall in Bed, Bath and Beyond is dedicated to "as seen on T.V." items? I feel like a kid in the candy store looking at all those products. I will confess I have made a purchase or two just out of curiosity.

Most times, I curtail my need to buy but often wonder if these products really do what they say they do. I especially like the commercials on T.V. that say, "call in the next 10 minutes and get two for one." I often think, "well, I could call Cis and see if she wants to give it a try" and we would only pay half but I mostly let the urge die out.

I have also wondered if the "ShamWow" is as good as the fellow on T.V. claims. Here is our chance to give it a try for Free. I don't usually fill out surveys but I checked this one out and it only took one minute to fill in my mailing information and answer about 8 multiple choice questions about my cleaning habits.

Fill out the survey here and receive 2 FREE large ShamWow Cloth Towels. It says it will take 8 weeks for delivery and you know I will be looking for it. We finally get to see if the ShamWow is as good as the fellow claims. Update: I got an email from cousin and she stated she was not impressed with the ShamWow. On occasion, I have signed up for a free offer and not received it but 95% of the time they come through - since I don't know anyone that has received this offer yet, I can't confirm.

You don't pay a cent, not even for Shipping and Handling and no one asks you for credit card information or any nonsense like that.

Grocery Shopping Habits

At some point in our lives our grocery shopping habits change -- some by dieting, new additions to the family, becoming an empty-nester or just the desire to lead a healthier lifestyle. Regardless of what you are buying or for how many, there is considerable savings available to consumers on all sorts of products even what I call "healthy living foods."

Now that we are almost officially empty-nesters, I am already thinking about what to buy, how much to buy and how do I prepare meals for just two people. I am really going to have to make some adjustments. I know we are only a family of three but I have always prepared meals like we were a family of five or more so we would always have food for our daughter's friends and drop-ins. This is the way I grew up. My mother prepared for a family of five but on any given day we could handle three or four extra's at the table and those seats were often filled.

Except for the occasional visits from our daughter and the restocking of the pantry for the onslaught of kids she will be bringing home on breaks, we will no longer need the quantities of food that we have been accustomed to purchasing.

I must say, I will definitely miss arriving home to find a slew of kids gathered around the kitchen island with a smorgasbord of food spread out to satisfy even the finickiest eater. No longer will there be a need to purchase four and five boxes of cereal a week that only last three days in our house. In our home, cereal is consumed by a barrage of kids, coming and going at all hours, for breakfast, lunch and dinner and even a mid-night snack. The two gallons of milk purchased each week will be reduced to half a gallon and will probably still spoil.

Even though there will be some trial and error on what our needs will be in the perishable department, the one thing that won't change and the area where I find my biggest savings is our household non-perishable items such as laundry and dish detergent, cleaners, paper products, batteries, and a multitude of personal products. I will continue to purchase those at rock bottom prices and stockpile for us as well as our daughter. I think she will look forward to all of the care packages I plan on sending.

Whether you live alone, are about to be an empty-nester or your shopping habits have changed, there is still a lot of money to be saved. Don't forget to check out your favorite manufacturer websites for their offers. Print coupons direct from their site. You may also visit Coupon 101 where I offer tips on saving as well as an endless supply of coupon resources.

And last but not least, there is always Savings With Sadie where you can come back often to find links to the latest deals and match-ups.

Bzz Agent Report

Here is my Bzz Report on Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain...

I mentioned in a previous post here how light the Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain goes on and that it does not clump. After using this new product for several days, I came to discover that it does not stay on the lips for very long. I don't understand the part about Cover Girls claim to "outlast." I am really disappointed in my discovery but still like how light weight the product feels when applied.

I have a friend that can buy the cheapest lipstick, apply it and wear it for hours and it still looks perfect. There has been some girl discussion on this and we figured out that our friend has full lips and the fuller your lips the better your lipstick will stay intact no matter what brand you wear. Those of us with not so full lips go through quite a bit of lip stick. So with all that said, I bet if she were to wear the Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain, it would last all day.

Click here to learn all about becoming a Bzz Agent. It is free and you get to try new products for giving honest feedback. You do not have to have a blog to participate.

Airborne

I am not sure if this really works but I take Airborne religiously when I am going on a long distance flight. It is a security blanket for me, and I guess I think if my immune system is strong, I will be protected from the germs on the plane. I take one every every hour for three hours prior to boarding plane. So far things have gone my way -- so I will keep up the ritual. Maybe it is just mind over matter for me.

Tavern on the Green Free Recipe Cards

There have been some fun girl trips to New York and a trip to New York always goes hand in hand with a visit to Tavern on the Green for lunch.

I thought this was cool and wanted to share. If you haven't been to the Tavern but you want to try some really good recipes, you have two options. Sign up here for Free recipe cards -- just your name address is all that is needed.

Or click here if you are impatient and want the recipes now.

You might want to check out their shop here. Could be a unique gift idea for someone for Christmas – a little treat from the Tavern. Proceeds go to support National Center for Missing and Exploited Children a very worthy cause.

Thanks Kathy at Freebie Frenzy.

The Sparrow's Nest

We interrupt this blog with this post to address a local issue. Please read this whether you live in my area or not... it may inspire you to help someone today.

I received an email today, that
The Sparrow's Nest located in Brunswick, Georgia is in dire need of food and financial assistance. Their cupboard is bare. The Sparrow's Nest supplies food and other items to needy families.

Also needed: Size 18-20 women's clothing for a cancer patient.

The Sparrow's Nest can find homes for bedding, furniture and appliances if you are remodeling and are looking for a place to give your old items.

We have all been so fortunate to take advantage of all the free offers, free groceries from being such great couponers, etc. Most of the families that depend on food from The Sparrow's Nest do not have a computer so they can't take advantage of grocery match ups and free food offers like we are able to.

Sooooo, I am encouraging all of you once again to please look in your pantry and make a bag for The Sparrow's Nest. Don't forget about toothpaste, deodorant, etc. All those great things we get for free. When you see items for free, even though you might not use that product, go ahead and get it and make it a donation to your local charity.

Now please don't get busy and forget about this post -- put together your bag now.

Call Zandra Miles 912-261-8959 before drop off

For monetary contribution mail check to:

FaithWorks
P. O. Box 2902
Brunswick, GA 31521

For those that don't live in the Brunswick, Georgia area, check out your own local charities and donate there. Never before in my lifetime have I seen people in such need. Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated -- every little bit helps.

Savings With Sadie is about "saving" but not just grocery savings. Today, let's make a difference in someone's life.

Why You Should Consider Joining The Savings Game

How many of you pay $7, $8 and $9 for razor cartridges. If you have expendable income that is great, but if you really and truly want to cut expenses, join our savings train and follow along. You might stumble and fall the first couple of times, but once you get the hang of it, you will be dangerous when it comes to keeping that dollar in your pocket.

Think about it --the benefits of the little bit of time you spend making your list, far out weighs the long hours you put in at your job to pay full retail for toiletries and other household items.

My mother is visiting and we have been a little pre-occupied so I did not get any match-ups done but I did want to make this post to get you motivated to save. I know some wonderful sites to fall back on when I am ready to go shopping and have been short on time. (You will find them in my blog roll on my side bar.) I checked out Hip 2 Save's Target deals here. She always does such a great job.

Here is just one example of the types of deals she puts together...

Buy 2 Select Schick razors or cartridges for $6.99 each=$5 Target gift card!
Deal Scenario:
Buy 2 Schick Quattro titanium Razors $6.99 each=$13.98
Use 2 $4 coupons from the 6/14SS or All You mag.
Pay $5.98
Get back a $5 gift card
Final cost .98 for 2 razors!

Do you get it? These are the kinds of deals we are talking about, when we say match-ups.

Savings With Sadie and sites similar to mine are all about helping you save and redistributing your income. You can still buy all of your favorite brands at greatly reduced prices and use the money saved for other projects or even pay for your next family vacation with the money you save over an entire year.

Are you motivated yet, if not, then go back to your job and work five to ten hours each week to pay for your personal household necessities and consider hopping on the savings train another time -- we will be here.

Where The River Ends - Free Copy

A Free Copy Really! I already have this book and I don't need another but I did fill out the one page form to see if there are any strings. I am sure I will find someone that would love to have it. There did not appear to be any issues - just a page to fill in my name and address and that was it.

With just a click here you can grab a Free copy. Looks simple and straight forward. If you are game to check it out, let us know if you encounter any issues. Limited quantities available.

I have read most all of Charles Martin's books and have also met him at a couple of local book signings. He is a charming christian man with a strong love for his wife and family -- a wonderful writer who pours his heart into his work.

Better Be Warned: This book will break your heart. Where The River Ends is set against the beauty of Charleston and the unpredictable waters of the St. Mary's River. The St. Mary's is just up the road from my house. While it is beautiful, I certainly would not want to be trekking through the swamp -- you enter a dark and dangerous world.

Glidden Paint Promotion

I recently posted a Glidden paint promotion giveaway - the offer ended July 2nd. For those that signed up, you should be getting your paint in the next couple of weeks. I never dreamed they would actually be mailing the paint but I have received two emails to indicate this. I was expecting a voucher to pick up the free paint.

Today's email explained to me that my paint should be arriving soon and there were instructions for opening the paint. Due to regulations, the paint is secured by a special locking ring. How many times have you purchased pre-packaged items and you spent ten minutes trying to open it up. How frustrating!

Here are instructions to keep you free from frustration...

Ring Removal InstructionsPlace a pair of pliers over the outer portion of the locking ring and clamp down. Apply an upward pressure on the pliers until the locking ring separates from the container. Peel the remaining portion of the locking ring off by hand.

Removing the ring from the container typically causes the locking ring to deform. Therefore, the locking ring is non-reusable after its initial removal.

It should be arriving just in time...My daughter picked out a pretty Spring Green to paint a piece of furniture for her dorm room.

SWS is always posting fun freebies with no strings. If you find strings, let me know.

Off Road Adventures

Here is one that just came across my computer. Free subscription to Off Road Adventures.

Town & Country Magazine: 1 Year Free Subscription

I know this Free offer won't be here long but if interested, click here to grab this Freebie quick.

Town & Country is all about fashion, travel, design, beauty, health, and the arts and antiques. It is a beautifully, well written magazine.

This is a no strings deal and should only take you one or two minutes to fill out form. Fill in your name and address. There are approximately 10 multiple choice questions and I know it is silly but you have to write in 25 words about your favorite watch.

You say something like:

I have a Timex digital waterproof watch. I like this watch because ...... (25 words minimum and maximum.)

I did not need another magazine, so I sent this one to my mom. I noticed that when I filled in the household income for her the first time it rejected me -- so I hit the back browser and re-entered information. They are looking for high income audience.

And that is it. You get a Free magazine subscription. Better than paying $4 or $5 per copy at checkout at the grocery store. I still cringe about my shopping habits of the "old days"at how many magazines I would throw in my buggy at the grocery store. Cha Ching. Now, I get all* my magazines for Free and you can too if you take advantage of these deals when I post them.

Again, this won't last long and the offer may be gone before you wake up.

* There is one exception and one magazine I do pay for because I actually save more money by buying it. You will just have to keep checking in with Savings With Sadie to find out which one.

Friday

Free Mocha Mondays

Real Simple Magazine $5 at Amazon

Click here and visit Amazon to get a one year subscription to Real Simple Magazine for $5. Save $49 off the store price.

Have Coupons Reloaded Again?

I was just looking at Coupons.com and it looks like there are new Q's. The Breyer coupon won't last long and matching it with a B1G1 free fetches a good deal. There are also Klondike Q's and you don't see these very often.

Remember to print two.

CVS Tip

Did you know that select CVS stores have red scanner boxes known as a "coupon center?" You can scan your CVS card to print out Q's if you have any available on your card.

I knew about the blue box but the red box is a new one on me. The blue scanner boxes only allow you to scan an item for its price.

I have two CVS stores near me: one friendly and organized, one unfriendly and unorganized although I have seen a bit of improvement. A couple of weeks ago, I asked the cashier where the blue scanner box was located and he just pointed in some random direction -- I never found it so I just left frustrated as usual at that store.

I like to check prices because many times the prices are not displayed correctly in the store, there may be an unadvertised sale, product being discontinued or packaging/branding is about to change.

Next time you are at CVS, try to locate the blue box for price checking and see if they carry the red box scanner. It would be nice to be able to print out coupons prior to purchase.

Thanks dedejf at HCW.

Old Navy is still having their Sunny Summer clearance sale $4.99 and up.

Check your email!

I just received an email from CVS with a $4 off next purchase of $20 or more now through July 19.

You may want to check your email to see if you received the coupon. If you are not registered at CVS, do so now to take advantage of their special offers and coupons.

Use those MFG's and ECB's for super savings.

Offer Expired: Resaturant.com

Restaurant.com is offering $25 gift certificates for $4 - may not be the $2 deal I am usually posting about but $4 is still great. Once again, this is on select restaurants for a limited time. On this one, use code KITCHEN and apply it at checkout.

You can purchase a $25 gift certificate for $10 any time, but we do like the $2, $3 and $4 deals better. Check out the restaurants in your area to see if they participate.
I know many of you have taken advantage of this deal over and over and keep coming back for more - here's your chance again.

2nd Edition of The Carnival of Savings

It is time to take submissions for the 2nd Edition of The Carnival of Savings.

If you would like to submit a post to the carnival, click on the submit button below. You will not actually be submitting the content but just the permalink.

Where it says "Carnival" and example, click on the drop down and scroll up a good bit and select "carnival of savings." Once selected, enter your permalink to your post and a brief comment and that is it.

The Carnival of Savings "topics" include general savings tips as well as savings in the following areas:

Grocery
Couponing
Meal Planning
Retail Savings
Gardening
Travel
Restaurant
Household
Consignment
Garage Sale
Budgeting

If you are a Treasure Hunter, you may even make a post to share your favorite flea market, antique store, and great deals found.

The 2nd edition is scheduled for release August 14. Submission deadline will be August 13.

Initially, we will publish approximately every four weeks. The goal eventually will be to publish every two weeks and to set up a schedule of hosts.

Important Note If You Are Interested in Hosting The Carnival of Savings:

As the Organizer for The Carnival of Savings, I am responsible for forwarding emails to the host of each edition. The host will weed through the submissions and toss out the emails that are not eligible or perhaps spam. If a post is in question, you may forward to me and I can review. As a host, you will only need to cut and paste the submission links to pull your edition together - no need to type it up and link - it is all done for you. You may even comment by adding an intro for each submission if you like but it is not necessary. You might comment on one or two.

The carnival will be a large post on your site, depending on the number of submissions.

As a host, you have the option to be the lead post if you choose to submit a tip. It is not necessary that you submit a post since you are hosting the carnival and putting the edition together. Since you are cutting a pasting the links it won't take you long. You may spend an hour weeding through the submissions.

If you have trouble posting, or if you are interested in hosting, please email carnivalofsavings at gmail dot com.

Free Ebay Kit

POST PULLED:

There appears to be a $39 charge for this. I only gave my address so it will be interesting to see if I get a bill. FREE is FREE to ME -- so what are they thinking. The print must have been real small for me to miss this.

Now, we will see what happens -- if they do bill me for my Free kit, it won't be pretty.

Thanks Anonymous for sharing. I encourage all the readers to help keep SWS free from spam and if they see a site with ulterior motives, we will pull it. I better start using my reading glasses. Keep sharing your tips and finds and SWS will post.

_______________________________________________________

Over the last few years, I have purchased items on eBay but I have never sold anything because I just did not know how to go about it. Well, maybe I will now give it a go -- I just found this free eBay kit and all I needed to provide was my name and address. I know a few people who have been successful with their eBay venture so I thought I would give it a try.
