Savvy Shopping and Saving

Click here to see how this savvy shopper got an HP OfficeJet Pro 8000 Printer valued at $149.99 and a ream of paper for a total of $.98 that is .98 cents - not dollars.  (must pay sales tax)

We talk a lot about discount codes and free shipping codes.  This is a great example.

Thanks Frugaldrmom!

Kashi Cereal

Kashi wants  you to try either their Heart to Heart Oat Flakes & Wild Blueberry Clusters, GOLEAN Crunch! or Honey Almond Flax, or Honey Sunshine as a FREE sample.

Kashi must really want me to try it because Saturday, I received a coupon for a Free box of Honey Sunshine cereal up to a $4.00 value.  I assume I received this because I had previously registered at Kashi's site and they often send out free product coupons on new items.

UPDATE 09-01: I just found out that I received this offer from Vocal Point.  I believe I have received three Free Product Offers in the past few weeks.

I also received five $1.50 coupons and I am sure Kashi would like for me to share their product coupons. For those of you that I know live in my area, email me and I will give you the Q's.  Today and tomorrow the $1.50 may double to $3.00 at HT during the final two days of Super Doubles.  The Q does say "do not double" but I have noticed that on a lot of my Q's that say this, the coupon still doubles.  Not sure about this one but you can give it a try if you like.  A 12 oz box sells for approximately $3.69 depending upon HT store (prices do vary).  You could have it for approx. $.69 if it doubles.

Again, Vocal Point is one of SWS favorite sites.

Sunday Recipe Sampler

Tarragon Chicken Salad

This is a very easy recipe and you may adjust your measurements to your personal taste.  You will find on this site that I don't always have exact measurements because I don't always measure.  Cook to suit your taste.  I also improvise a lot and switch ingredients around.

Ingredients:

1 Roasted Chicken or 1 Boiled Chicken
2 or 3 Green Onion Stalks chopped small
3 or 4 stalks  of celery chopped small
1/2 medium Vidalia or Sweet Onion chopped small
1/4 c to 1/2 c Almonds chopped
Mayo
Fresh Tarragon (probably used 1/2 of a package)
Salt and Pepper
Pickle juice/water

De-bone chicken and chop with Pampered Chef food chopper or like item.  I usually chop to a fine consistency.  Chop green onions, sweet onion, almonds, celery and tarragon using knife or food chopper.  Mix with chicken.

Use a serving spoon to add a BIG dollop of mayo -- use more or less to suit your taste or diet.  If the consistency appears to be a little dry, the trick is to add pickle juice and you may dilute it with water or skip the pickle juice and add a 1/4 c. of water.  This will prevent you from adding more mayo and too many calories.

To change this recipe around, leave out the tarragon and almonds -- add red seedless grapes and roasted walnuts.

Old Navy Weekly

Boy, you have to be quick to grab the Q's on Old Navy Weekly.  The $65 off $100 Q went fast.  I have a reminder on my calendar each week to check the deals on Thursday but I hit delay and forgot to go back in and check.  Hint: click on image to find Q.  There are still Q's available for $10 off of $50 and a few other offers.

If you still need to do back to school shopping or even shop for yourself, Old Navy Weekly is a great website to check often for deep discount coupons.  Of course, they are limited and timing is everything -- check early on Thursday evening and maybe even afternoon.

They also offer an item of the week which is usually 50% off.  This week: Women's Argyle Sweaters:  Sale:  $12  Regular $25.  Stop by your Old Navy and check it out.  Offer good 8/28 - 9/3.

I was hoping to grab a Q for my daughter and/or her friends to purchase a bunch of hoodies because  they are going to have a little cooler winter than they are use to here on the coast.  Even if you don't have a coupon, Old Navy has reasonable prices for families on a budget.

This is just one more site to add to your list of favorites!

Comparison Shopping on the Internet and In Store

For years, I have compared prices whether making a major or small purchase. I have saved anywhere from several thousand dollars to $30 or $40 and the money saved is always worth the five or six minutes I spend on the internet or a few phone calls I make to a store.

My biggest savings over the years has been on furniture.  I was able to snag some great deals on high-end furniture.  Family members turned me on to shopping in North Carolina years ago and I was very successful with all of my purchases.  Unfortunately, after decades in the furniture business, the store we all used closed its doors -- so now I am looking for a new and trusted discounter.

You must know that internet shopping is not for everyone.  Some people need to feel the product and visit it several times in the store prior to making a purchase.  I would not recommend purchasing upholstered (soft case) pieces on-line unless you have actually sat on the chair or sofa and also have seen the fabric swatch.  Stick with hard case such as dining, bedroom and so on.  It is important you are precise in your space dimensions -- you don't want the piece to arrive and not fit.

Here is our latest comparison shopping deal, while not so large, we did manage to save our daughter approximately $40.  To her, this is a huge savings.

Several months ago we purchased three Apple MacBook Pro 13.3-Inch Laptops. Our daughter needed one for college, my husband one for work and since my husband was tired of me grabbing for his laptop all the time, I ended up with one and that was not part of the original plan as we headed out to the Apple Store that day-- but I am not complaining.

The laptops did not come with the Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition and our daughter has since discovered she will need it for college and for making power point presentations.  We internet shopped one quote, called one store and she visited the university bookstore for a quote...

University Bookstore:   $149.00 plus tax

Staples:  $129.00 plus tax

Amazon:  $109.00 no tax and free shipping

Which one do you think she purchased?  It would have been easy for her to grab the $149 right off the shelf at the store but I told her she had waited this long, she could wait a few more days and save the $40.

Next time you plan to make a purchase, compare a few stores. If making price comparisons on cameras and computers, make sure you are comparing two like items and not a Mac computer with 160 gig and the other 240 gig. Same with cameras - pixel for pixel and zoom for zoom.  The good deal you may have thought you got is not such a good deal any more when you realize some of your bells and whistles are missing.

Together in Education

If your grocery store participates in Together in Education, please relink your loyalty card (such as Harris Teeter's VIC card) to the school of your choice.  You must relink your card each school year at Harris Teeter.  Check with your grocery store to see if you need to relink.

It only takes a minute and the schools really need the money.

Harris Teeter Match-Ups Aug 26 - Sep 1

This list is based on using the Georgia Times Union, so prices and coupon value will vary from paper to paper and store to store.

Sunday Recipe Sampler - Making Salsa With Daniel

I was planning to post a recipe for chicken salad; however, this weekend finds me at our cabin and meeting Daniel who is preparing salsa in our club house kitchen.  I can't say that I helped, but I tried to take lots of pictures and take notes.

Daniel and I had just a bit of a communication problem -- it must be my southern English. Let's call this Salsa Verde! At least I think it is Salsa Verde -- this recipe looks very similar to salsa we had while we were vacationing in Akumal, Mexico last summer.

I wish I could be more exact on the number of tomatoes and jalapenos but I think it is the process that is more important.

I do cook a lot without measurements -- using my hands the way I watched my mama and my siti cook for years.  However, I measure when things need to be exact -- especially using flour.  This is the kind of recipe you can make your own.  If you like it hot, go with more jalapenos; if you like it milder, go half and half.

Ingredients Needed:

Green Tomatoes (lots according to Daniel)
Jalapeno (even more according to Daniel - the hotter the better)
2 or 3 cloves Garlic (not the entire pod, just cloves in each pot)
2 Large Onions
2 pks Cilantro

Step 1:  Boil Tomatoes, Jalapeno, and Garlic for 35 minutes minimum. Daniel has two pots going on the stove.  He probably went half and half with the tomatoes and jalapenos on this one - perfect for my taste ...

Step 2:  While the pot is boiling, cut up cilantro and onions and put to the side until much later.

Step 3:  Slightly drain the boiled mixture with a slotted spoon and add to blender. Blend on puree or stir mode. Continue process until all is blended. Since Daniel had two pots going, he had a lot of blending.

Adjust the thickness to your taste.  You may add some of the stock from pot to blend. The salsa is quite thin anyway, however, for thicker salsa, do not add any stock -- just enough to get the blender going.

Step 4:  Once all is blended, let cool in a large pot for a couple of hours and then add the onion and cilantro.

It is important that you wait until the mixture is cool because otherwise the cilantro will turn   black.  You can speed up the cooling process by putting salsa in the fridge the last hour and once cool, add cilantro and onion.

Finally, add salt to taste, chill and serve.

The salsa was exceptional but Daniel really likes it hot -- so he prepared a special batch on the side and blended only jalapenos (no tomatoes) and later added the onion and cilantro.  It was fire engine hot.

Just watching Daniel make the salsa and learning the process gave me some ideas to perhaps adjust it for my wimpy taste. Maybe, I will even throw in some cucumber.  For red salsa, use red tomatoes and same process.  It makes a lot, so jar it up and share with friends.

If you have an appetizer you would like to share, please link up. If you do not have a blog but want to share a recipe, please post it in the comments section.

By the way, we put a Cabrito on the smoker for about five hours and used tortilla wraps, Daniel's salsa and ate it fajita style.

How about this smoker on wheels!...

Rain Checks Are A Good Thing

Rain checks typically do not expire so it is a good idea to go ahead and grab a couple for future use if the store runs out of the item at the time of sale. You can take advantage of the store sale with your coupons at a later date.

Today, I was finally able to use a rain check I have had for a couple of months when Duracell AA and AAA 4 pack batteries went on sale for $2.19 a pack. I was able to use my .75 off coupons I had recently cut out of the PG flyer along with my rain check. It also happens to be triples so the batteries ended up being Free which was an even better deal than my original deal would have been. I bought the maximum which is three items. This is huge savings considering the batteries generally sell for $4.19 + a pack. I saved approximately $13 total just on the batteries.

Although the coupons I had planned to use at the time of original sale did expire, I knew that the PG flyer would come out with more of the same Q's at a later date.

Are you keeping up with this blog and starting to understand how the savings adds up. You don't have to capture every deal (that's impossible) but there are many good deals out there that will keep money in your pocket and from reading the paper and watching T.V. things don't seem to be getting any better in our economy -- we may be on this sinking ship for a couple more years.

Check out the Grocery Match-Ups in the top right side bar for Publix, Kroger, CVS, Target, Walmart and many more stores.

Stop by Savings With Sadie for a few tips on keeping money in your pocket!

Vocal Point often sends you a coupon for a free product or a high value coupon along with additional coupons for you to share with friends and family.

The 2 Month Bounce Dryer Bar retails for $3.74 at Walmart. Vocal Point sent a Q for $2.50. Get the bar for $1.24. No need to worry about dryer sheets any longer - just replace the bar in two months.
I don't know about you but I love to make and eat Rice Krispie treats and savings of $4.00 on just one item is huge. There are offers like this and more at SWS. I recently purchased All x2 HE for $1.77 a bottle - it retails for over $6.00 - this is a great product, huge savings and I was able to snag four bottles which will last for the next few months.

Vocal Point provides valuable and interesting insights about new products, surveys, daily tips, articles, and coupons and samples -- it is worth checking out!

Sunday Recipe Sampler - Share Your Favorite Recipe Here

Everyday I find new gadgets to play with and today I want to give Mr. Linky a go. I found out about him several months ago but there were some issues with the server so I elected not to participate. It looks like he is good to go again and I would like to give him a test drive.

If you have a recipe you would like to share, please link up and let's give it a test. This week any recipe is a go. Later on, we may set a theme such as salads, appetizers and so on.

I will start off with a recipe a friend shared with me a couple of months ago. I tried it and it was delicious and very easy to prepare -- and I like EASY. Here goes...

Crab Quiche

Mix together:

1/2 c mayo
2 T flour
2 eggs beaten
1/2 c milk
8 oz cream cheese softened.

Add:

1 pound crab meat (drained, picked, flaked)
8 ounces swiss cheese
1/2 c chopped green onions

Divide evenly between:
2 unbaked (9 inch) deep dish pie shells

Bake 350 40-45 minutes
Yields 8-10 servings

This recipe is great to serve any time but especially for a brunch with some fruit and maybe a side of cheese grits.

Welcome To The Carnival of Savings - 2nd Edition

There were over 100 submissions for this edition and I am sorry I am not able to post them all. I will try and make a part two post in the next week. The post we will be highlighting today has inspired me to be even more conscientious of my spending habits.

The post was made by a young man, Luke, from the UK and he blogs at The Travellers Journey. In Luke's submission, Saving to Travel Around the World, he blogs about his day to day life and cutting expenses to reach his ultimate goal of travelling around the world.

He has been working on getting his affairs in order by paying off his school debt, creating a budget, as well as an itinerary of the places he would like to visit. How exciting is this? Does it get you motivated? It should!

Luke's approach to saving money is by sacrificing on the things he can do without. He gives great thought to daily purchases and household expenses. He may eat lunch out only one day a week instead of every day. He limits his fine dining to maybe once a month. For many his age, it is difficult to make this sacrifice but he does it all with a constant reminder of that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Luke is still a good year or year and a half away from making the journey but there is no doubt with his well made plan and his strong desire to realize his dream, he will succeed.

Today, the majority of us are saving money for different reasons, whether by choice or out of necessity. Whatever your reason, make a plan. Write down your goal - keep it out front at all times as a reminder.

I have met some really savvy savers over the past few months and have learned and shared quite a few savings tips. Let's see who else can inspire us to save today ...

Then, for even more savings, make your reservations for hotel and car well in advance."

College Move In Day

Tuesday was move in day at the dorm and this is how we did it all...

Up at 6:00 AM - quick breakfast - and off to the dorm to get in line by 7:30 AM. Check-in was at 8:00 AM - but early arrival guaranteed us a cart to help cut down on trips to and from the truck.

Thank goodness we were first in line and by 8:45 AM, after non-stop trips, my daughter and I had moved everything in to the dorm - and by 9:00 AM we were on Baxter Street purchasing an 8' x 12' carpet for the dorm room, and by 11:00 AM, it was extremely hot and we were glad we were early arrivals due to the back log of folks trying to get carts and elevators in the heat.

It was a fast, easy and exhausting move in but the work had only just begun -- beds had to be lofted, carpet had to be cut to fit, and then everything had to be unpacked and boy was the room a mess since we had previously dumped the items in the floor while going back and forth for load after load. We were only given a 1 hour time slot to get all the items in and then we had to move the vehicle. We also created quite a bit of debris from all the boxes that had to be unpacked and of course, we had to dispose of these - so that created a bit of extra work.

My husband was limited in what he could do since he is still recovering from surgery but he acted as our security guard -- watching items while we made trips back and forth from the dorm to truck. He was also a great chauffeur driving us from Point A to Point B and he even made our Target run and also hooked up electrical items.

We took a much needed break at 1:00 PM for lunch with family and immediately all went our separate ways to finish the move in process.

I have posted a few pics of our daughters dorm room. I am sure she will change things around a bit and make a few additional purchases to help with organization. She picked out everything, painted an old shelf and the colors go beautifully together. She even used scrapbook paper for photo frames and glued magnets to the back of them and used these to hide the rusty worn metal closet.

The black chair is from Foamiture. We had it shipped to the dorm and it comes vacuum packed, weighing only 19 pounds. It is very popular with college kids, light weight and doesn't break the bank. It is a good thing we had it shipped direct to the school because it would have never fit in the truck.

We finally finished up around 5:00 PM, and then drove to a few other dorms to visit friends and family and check out their progress.

It was time to say goodbye but we made it short and sweet, leaving our daughter with friends on their way to a sorority meeting. Tears were held at bay, we laughed and hugged and said goodbye - -very quickly I might add. I could have shed a bucket of tears but I wanted to leave her in good spirits - so I decided to save my tears for the drive home.

This is the window in her room. Although you can't see it well, we made a fabric valance out of one of the leftover curtains we used on the bed.

The house is quite, the animals are confused, and we wait anxiously for the next time we see our daughter and hear about her exciting adventures. Until then, we will be starting a new chapter in our lives and adjusting to all the changes...Sadie is really ready to save now that she has a daughter in college, so we will be looking for and sharing all the best deals!

Note: One of the last things I said to our daughter was to stay in touch and keep us posted and I guess she took it literally to mean 24/7. In the wee hours of this morning (4:14 AM to be exact), when I was in my deepest slumber, I received a text message that she was experiencing her first fire drill. Somehow with blurred vision, I managed to text her back "oh how exciting and to call me any time day or night, love mommie!"

Oh and one other thing, as my husband left for work this morning, he handed me a brand new box of tissues. Isn't that thoughtful!

Coupon Databases

Harris Teeter Match-Ups have gotten a lot easier since I created my own coupon database. It takes me about one hour every Sunday to input the information. The database is located on my Georgia Inexpensively contributor page but I am working on uploading it to Savings With Sadie as well.

Not only does the database make the match-up process simpler, it can also be used as a great tool during Super Doubles and Triples. Aside from the match ups I post on the sale items from the ad, I can also sort the "coupon value" with one click and take a glance at all the .75 q's that triple to $2.25 or the high dollar q's for Super Doubles, and in conjunction, use the Harris Teeter Express Lane to come up with additional match ups.

I could have spent two more hours pulling deals on the match ups I previously posted for Triples but time just does not allow. There are tons of deals and if you decide to give it a try and find any matchups not posted, please share the deal.

Coupon Match Up System - What You Should Know!

When comparing match ups from blog site to blog site on the same grocery store, you may find some price discrepancies on the same item. This will always be the case due to the following:
  • Grocery prices on the same store can vary by region.
  • Coupon inserts vary by region. *
  • Not all stores have the same tearpads, hang tags, and so on.
* I have compared the Georgia Times Union coupon flyer inserts with other (large) regional newspapers. In general, I would say that 85% of the Q's are the same. I recently compared my list with an Indiana newspaper and out of a possible 80 q's, there were 15 -20 q's that we were mismatched on. There were some products in the Indiana inserts I had never heard of and my regional flyer also had product q's that the Indiana paper did not.

In my research, I noticed a few of the same Q's had different values/quantities...

i.e.: One region may have a Q on Lysol for .75 off of 1 item and another paper may have .60 off of 2.

So when you can't find a coupon or you notice the amount/quantity varies, your final price will be different. I know this can be frustrating but just being armed with this information will help and also save you time going through your flyers over and over looking for a coupon that is not there.

Also remember that not every blogger can capture every deal so you may see some items that vary from post to post as well.

Share the savings -- it is always nice for readers to pitch in and help - share the deals you find in comments or via email.

Coupon Organization System

For assistance in helping you organize your coupons, you may want to take a look at this post and this post, I did a while back. I am also coming up with another system that may work better for me since my grocery shopping habits will be changing due to our daughter moving out.

I will post about it later, but in the meantime check out a couple of systems below and just know that there is no one system that is right for everyone -- you need to experiment and find one that works best for you and keeps you the most organized.

Click here to review The Couponizer and scroll a good bit down for reviews.

Organization will save you lots of time and lots of money. I have not tried The Couponizer Coupon System but have heard that it is a popular system.

Here are a few other product links you may want to check out if you are trying to get organized.

Harris Teeter: Doubles, Triples, or Supers

I see rumors floating around out in cyber space that Harris Teeter will be tripling this Wednesday. I have NOT confirmed.

We are up early to move in to the dorm and that should keep us busy for most of the day. If anyone hears that their Harris Teeter is tripling, let us know -- especially the SSI store.

Monday

Savings With Sadie Postings

UPDATE: The truck is packed and it is dipping a little in the back due to all the boxes of tissue I packed but we got everything loaded.

HT match ups will run a little late and probably not be posted until late Wednesday.

_________________________________________________________

There has not been much posting going on over the past week or so and the pattern will probably continue for the next week. We have been travelling visiting family prior to my daughter leaving for college.

We are back home and the rush is on to get ready for the move... We still have a few visits to the stores and lots of fun things to buy.

Match-ups for next week will possibly run late on Wednesday, August 12 due to the fact that I will be travelling back from taking my daughter to college.

As time allows over the next week, I will post deals that come my way.

Don't forget to check out the new format for my Harris Teeter match-ups.
